Skanska provided construction management services for the five-story, 392,000-SF replacement facility at Homestead Hospital. The new 120-bed, hospital broadens healthcare services for the expanding population of south Miami-Dade County. The new hospital features all private patient rooms, an Emergency Center three times the size of the previous one, additional operating rooms, and more clinical space for outpatient diagnostic services and minimally invasive surgery. The facility was designed to bring natural elements inside and respect patient privacy and create a “healing environment”.
The new Central Energy Plant includes a pair of 300 hp boilers that generate steam for both heating and domestic hot water systems, three 800-ton centrifugal chillers, and a pair of 1500 KW emergency power generators and associated paralleling switchgear. The equipment is designed to provide full HVAC and electrical services during the kind of extended power outages that would be expected from a major hurricane. In fact, the entire building, including the hospital, is designed to remain entirely functional and withstand the effects of a Category 5 hurricane.
