The jury of the PLGBC Green Building Awards 2024 recognized two projects realized by Skanska: the second phase of the Centrum Południe complex in Wroclaw, which won in the “Sustainable Office Building” category, and the P180 office building in Warsaw, honored in the newly introduced category for the building with the lowest carbon footprint, as calculated according to the PLGBC methodology.

Centrum Południe

Implementing efficient, innovative solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of office buildings is an integral part of Skanska's design process in Poland. The quality and effectiveness of these solutions were once again acknowledged in this Polish competition, which aims to raise awareness of and promote sustainable construction. In this year’s PLGBC Green Building Awards, the second phase of the Centrum Południe complex in Wroclaw was awarded in the “Sustainable Office Building” category, while the P180 development in Warsaw received recognition for achieving the lowest carbon footprint.

Effective ways to reduce carbon footprint

Skanska prioritizes finding solutions that help us and our tenants with limiting environmental impact. This is driven not only by our group’s climate goals but also by our sense of responsibility toward the planet and future generations – says Monika Chacińska, Environmental Manager at Skanska’s commercial development business unit in CEE. – The award given to P180 is particularly significant, as this year marked the debut of the carbon footprint category in the PLGBC competition, and we presented results with full transparency – adds Monika Chacińska.

In constructing its office buildings, Skanska uses materials with recycled content, such as steel, concrete, and aluminum. Approximately 90% of recyclable construction waste is sent for reprocessing.

The buildings feature equipment and systems that conserve more resources than standard solutions. For example, Skanska’s free-cooling system reduces energy consumption for air conditioning by utilizing cool outside air. Additionally, chilled beams distribute cool air without generating noise, ensuring work comfort and using less energy compared to conventional ventilation systems based on fan coil units.

The PLGBC judges recognized both phases of the Centrum Południe complex, underscoring our consistent delivery of office spaces that create real value for employees and reduce environmental impact. It’s also important to note that the judges evaluate not only the building itself but also the development of its surroundingssays Artur Mamrot, Project Manager at Skanska’s commercial development business unit in CEE.Centrum Południe stands out in this regard, as it offers a comprehensive experience with spaces for employees and residents to relax. The project includes solutions that support the microclimate through specially designed rain gardens, which enhance biodiversity, moisten the air, and increase water retention – adds Artur Mamrot.

Both P180 and Centrum Południe meet the standards of major industry certifications, including WELL Gold, LEED Platinum and Building without Barriers.
